Dr. Abhijit Gosavi is a Professor in the Department of Engineering Management and Systems Engineering. He obtained a Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering from the University of South Florida in 1999, an M. Tech in Mech. Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras in 1995, and BS in Mech. Engineering from the Jadavpur University in 1992. His research interests are in simulation-based optimization, Markov control, and applications in production and service systems. Currently, he serves as the Managing Editor of the Engineering Management Journal. He is also the author of the Springer book, Simulation-Based Optimization, which has been adopted as a textbook in leading universities across the U.S. He has published more than 30 articles in national and international journals, including in premier journals such as Management Science, Automatica, Machine Learning, INFORMS Journal on Computing, and Journal of Retailing. Over the years, his research has been supported by the Department of Defense, the VA Hospitals, and the National Science Foundation.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The goal of this project is to study a new class of algorithms in the area of MDPs that seek to adjust for risk and at the same time maximize potential revenues. We have had encouraging results with two new algorithms developed: one for reducing variance and the other for downside risk.

Factors leading to Entrepreneurial Risk in a System of Systems (SoS) and Project Success


PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The goal of this project was (i) to study mechanisms to predict the behavior of an individual system within an SoS from the perspective of the central controller and (ii) identify factors that can help improve the success of a defense project with numerous players who are not co-located. This resulted in the following papers (this was partly funded by a grant from DoD).

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
This is an ongoing project in which we seek to use Reinforcement Learning Techniques to solve challenging problems from the domain of environmentally conscious green manufacturing. Many problems in remanufacturing industries can be set up as Markov decision processes where RL can be a useful solution method.
