This project aims at developing a www-based intelligent collaborative system for integrated design and manufacturing using case based reasoning. Specifically, this system is composed of three components: collaboration, design, and manufacturing. The collaboration component provides a virtual collaborative envinronment for a part designer to perform on-line communication with customers and manufacturers via the internet. The design component is a design by features system, which includes extension mechanism and evaluation mechanism. With these two auxiliary mechanisms, the design module is able to generate a very complicated user-defined feature and to provide feedback concerning potential manufacturing problems in the early design stage. The manufacturing component is a process planning system using case based reasoning.
